Your personal and professional lives both bear the brunt of things when you are suffering with bad breath. Those close to you are not likely to come straight out with it and tell you that you have a problem; they will just mention it to others when you are not around because they are embarrassed to tell you to your face, both for their sakes and for yours. So, what is the cause of bad breath or halitosis and what can be done about it?

Common Causes of Bad Breath

Most of us do not have the freshest breath when we wake in the mornings. This is usually dealt with by brushing our teeth and although this takes away the bad breath for a while, it's not too long before the smell comes back during the day and this is when it affects the people around you, making them take a step back when you are engaged in a close conversation with them.

Many cases of smelly breath are related to a particular situation. If you had a strongly flavored meal, say garlic or onions, or smoked a few cigarettes or cigars the night before this will affect the personal freshness of your mouth. Alcohol consumption is another so called situational reason for not so fresh breath.

Another cause of bad breath could be occasional. People quite often use breath fresheners or chewing gum to freshen their breath especially when they suffer from halitosis. However, such products do not last for long if the root of the problem is not dealt with and the odors will soon work themselves through these masks.

Many people suffer chronic cases of halitosis when the bad smell emanates from both the mouth and nose and they just do not know what to do to get rid of bad breath as they are already following their personal oral hygiene routine to perfection.

One of the most common causes of halitosis is when the bacterium which is naturally present in your mouth feeds off the bits of food which remain in your teeth from your last meal. The best way to tackle this is to use a really good toothbrush which will enable you to clean in between your teeth, as well as give you easy access to the inside of your teeth, an area which sometimes gets missed when brushing.

Every time you brush your teeth, do it for at least five minutes. If you do not dedicate this amount of time to this exercise, you are definitely not reaching all of the areas you should be and this, in turn, is a cause of bad breath.

Choose a good toothpaste and mouthwash too. Products can quite often hinder the problem of bad breath instead of helping it. Try using those which contain baking soda and peroxide as their main ingredients as these two can alleviate the problems which cause bad breath and if you feel your your teeth are clean and your breath is fresh, you will be far more confident when holding a conversation face to face with your friends, colleagues and loved ones.
