Can Yogurt Really Be a Bad Breath Remedy?



It seems like yogurt has been said to help or cure so many health issues that it's hard to keep track. I'm sure you've heard that yogurt helps you lose weight, improves your digestive system, and is high in calcium which helps build strong bones and teeth, and also rich in vitamin C. It has been reported to be a viable substitute source of vitamins obtained from milk for the lactose intolerant. But, have you heard that a group of Japanese microbiologists led by Dr. Kenichi Hojo from Tsrumi University in Yokahoma, Japan found that that eating yogurt regularly works very well as a bad breath remedy. The yogurt actually helps you to have fresher breath. They presented their finding to the 83rd General Session of the Association for Dental Research in Baltimore, Maryland. Their research is extremely impressive.

Apparently they found that yogurt contains bacteria called Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. These are good bacteria and they help to kill off the bad bacteria that are in your mouth now. The bacteria you have now gives off hydrogen sulfide which smells like rotten eggs as a bi-product and part of that bi-product is the plaque that forms on your teeth. Then to put it to the test and find out if this could make a noticeable difference they used 24 healthy volunteers for the study. Each volunteer was asked to not eat any yogurt product including pickled vegetables and cheese for a period of two weeks prior to the start of the test. To start the test they took saliva samples from the mouths of each person. These samples were then tested for levels of hydrogen sulfide and the bacteria levels for later reference.

Throughout the next six weeks each day the volunteers were to consume 3 ounces of yogurt in the morning and 3 more ounces in the evening each day. When the tests were concluded their research showed that when given 6 ounces of yogurt per day 80% of the volunteers had a drop in odor causing hydrogen sulfide. Gingivitis (a gum disease) had a significant drop in levels and plaque build-up was remarkably reduced in the volunteers that consumed the yogurt during the tests. These results are very hopeful for all of us.

Unfortunately these results will still need to be confirmed by an independent research facility before they will be widely accepted. However, most doctors will tell you that it's a good idea to incorporate yogurt into your diet. The heath benefits are just too great to pass up. Besides yogurt tastes good and with all the different ways yogurt is packaged and all the different flavors you can get, you have no excuse not to try it for yourself. I will tell you that in the test they used sugar free yogurt. It is recommended that you do the same. I am not a fan of any sugar free product so I just made sure I rinsed my mouth out with water after I got through with my yogurt.

Go ahead take the test. I know this will sound gross but, first thing in the morning before you even take a drink of water or coffee or anything. Take a napkin and wipe your tongue with it. Then carefully wipe the inside of your cheeks. Now take this napkin and put it into a clean new baggy, being careful to remove as much of the air from the baggy as possible. Now put the baggy into the freezer out of the way. It will be there for the next six weeks.

Now try eating 3 ounces of yogurt in the morning and 3 ounces in the evening for six weeks. At the end of the six weeks take the baggy out of the freezer and let it thaw out but don't open it yet. While that one it thawing out take another napkin and wipe your tongue as before. Don't forget, you have to do this first thing in the morning. Now let the second napkin dry out a few minutes. Your first napkin that is in the baggy should be ready by now. OK there is no easy way around this you need to open the baggy and immediately smell the napkin inside the baggy. That smell was your breath before. Now smell the napkin you set aside to dry. Big difference don't you think? So in conclusion the answer is yes yogurt really can be a bad breath remedy.
